Super Furry Animal frontman Gruff Rhys returns with another melodic gem. Whimsical and upbeat, Babelsberg is a worthy addition to the SFA frontman's cannon of work.
Babelsberg has had a lengthy gestation period by the prolific songwriters standards, and this, Gruff's fifth solo lp benefits wildly from the beautiful orchestrations of award-winning composer Stephen McNeff. Indeed, release was delayed for the best part of a year whilst awaiting the scores of in-demand McNeff.
Turns out it was well worth the wait, and highlights include the poppy Limited Edition Heart and Negative Vibes, whilst Take That Call has 70's AOR radio written all over it. Think Harry Nillsson cuddling up with only his Scott Walker albums for comfort. Gentle humour and a touch of Welsh wistfulness permeate the grooves of this fine record, and once again we are touched by Gruff's melodic magic.
