MGMT are back from the abyss with a supreme album full of synth pop wonderment, not that far removed from their 2008 debut smash Oracular Spectacular. Gone are the peverse anti-songs that have dominated their last two albums and in their place are some pure pop gems.
Me and Michael is one such highlight, the oddball lyrics still very much in place but gone are the overloaded guitars-ousted by synth hooks last heard circa Scritti Politti (1985). Other highlights include the Syd Barrett wonkiness of When You're Small and the dreamy closer Hand It Over. But there's a cohesion to this album that makes it such a success-and Vinyl Revolution's album of the week!
